Major Changes to Veterans’ Scholarship Program
May 25, 2017  -  The Alabama Legislature recently took measures to control the increasing costs of the Alabama G.I. Dependent Scholarship Program. This scholarship program provides tuition, textbooks and instructional fees at any state-supported institution of higher learning, college or university to qualified dependents of eligible disabled veterans.
Free Legal Help Offered for Veterans in Montgomery, Tuskegee
May 24, 2017  -  In commemoration of National Military Appreciation Month, Legal Services Alabama and the Department of Veterans Affairs will begin a partnership on May 24th to offer free civil legal services to low income Veterans in Central Alabama.
State Veterans Facilities Plans Memorial Day Tributes
May 23, 2017  -  The William F. Green, the Bill Nichols and the Col. Robert L Howard State Veterans Homes and the Alabama State Veterans Cemetery are extending a public invitation to Memorial Day programs on Monday, May 29. These events will be a time to celebrate the men and women who have served our nation faithfully, and to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while standing on the front lines of freedom.
State Board of Veterans Affairs Votes on Veterans Homes
May 16, 2017  -  The State Board of Veterans Affairs met on May 15th and voted unanimously not to accept existing facilities for conversion to state veterans homes. The Board directed the commissioner of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) to not accept any existing facilities. The renovation of existing buildings and long-term upkeep costs make such projects ill-advised.
