Out-of-State Tuition Waiver

The Alabama G. I. Dependents Scholarship program provides educational benefits for dependent children, step-children, spouses, or the un-remarried widow/widower of eligible disabled veterans.

This nationally renowned program has been in place since 1947 and has provided education to thousands of dependents of Alabama’s veterans. The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students attending eligible Alabama state-supported universities, colleges, junior colleges or a prescribed course of study at any state-supported technical school.

The State Legislature made changes to the scholarship program in 2017. Under ACT 2017-349 one new current residency requirement was added for both the veteran and dependents. Due to added requirements, certain veterans may no longer qualify for eligibility under the program. If their dependents attend college in the state of Alabama, they may be charged out of state tuition.

Senator Gerald Dial recently passed a resolution encouraging public colleges in the state of Alabama to waive out-of-state tuition for those students. He envisioned that these students would make application for the Alabama G.I. Dependent Scholarship Program and receive a denial letter due to the unmet residency requirements. This denial letter could then be presented to participating schools and the student would be charged in-state tuition.

The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs requests that those veteran friendly schools choosing to participate in this resolution, inform the department at (334) 242-5077 in order for veterans and dependents to be more informed about changes to the G. I. Dependent Scholarship program.
